SYL Video Pick - Just Like You Imagined by Nine Inch Nails

Just cause I'm on vacation doesn't  mean I'm gonna stop posting chit I like. I was watching 300 the other day and remembered the first time I saw the trailer. I was left in awe. I remember going to the midnight IMAX screening the day it came out cause of it. If this chit does not make you go all Hulk Hogan on ur shirt then I dunno what will.
As a bonus I included the 300 movie trailer and a most excellent rehearsal in which Trent makes all his musicians crap their pants.
Enjoy.

SYL Retro Song Pick - White Room by Cream

Cream were a 1960s British blues-rock band and supergroup consisting of bassist/vocalist Jack Bruce, guitarist/vocalist Eric Clapton, and drummer Ginger Baker. Their sound was characterized by a hybrid of blues, hard rock and psychedelic rock, combining Eric Clapton's blues guitar playing with the voice and basslines of Jack Bruce and the jazz-influenced drumming of Baker.

SYL APPROVED - Class Actress @ Fellini

This is crazy. First Phantogram and now Class Actress, it really is an embarrassment of riches. The best part is that we all get to experience the ride together.
So now to the music. It doesn't take much to instantly like Class Actress. Just from the opening stanza of "Journal Of Ardency" u get the idea that this is something different. The reality of it is that it has been done before, just not as aesthetically pleasing or catchy. The mixture of vinyl samples, looped into Billboard Top 20 worthy melodies, coupled with Elizabeth Harper's sensual voice crooning over it, makes for one of the most interesting releases of the year. A lot of good music coming out of Williams"Beard", Brooklyn  and they are one of the obvious standouts.
Friday Night will be amazing, hope u can make it. Here are a few tracks to keep u entertained till then.

SYL Video Pick - I Bet They Were Great @ Rockband

Pink Floyd is to be listened NOT PLAYED under the influence!!!

Guga U Get A Star... Thanks

Essential 5 - The Cure

The Cure seems to be the common denominator in most ipods. Everyone's heard their iconic tunes from Friday I'm In Love to Just Like Heaven but that's where the experience ends. Some of you don't know that behind those hits, lies an amazing catalog that spans almost 30 years. Dark, complex and somewhat disturbing are just some words I chose to describe their songs. Its no wonder Edward Scissor-hands was modeled after Robert Smith.  Anyways, its great to see the band still at work, churning out record after record and doing most excellent collaborations.

Not In Love (Feat. Robert Smith) - Crystal Castles

Its funny seeing how so many people envision them as a totally different band stemming from their hits, myself included. I remember the first time I saw a picture of them, I was in disbelief. Their style and these songs really did not make sense to me at the time. That is until I started listening to their other stuff. Now I cant picture them differently. I cant picture the whole genre differently. They defined it and while they are the reason ur son is wearing lipstick and mascara, they'll probably get him laid too.
Excluding the songs everyone knows and love, here is what I think to be The Cure's Essential 5.

SYL Retro Song Pick - How To Fight Loneliness by Wilco

This was the first song I ever heard from what has become one of my favorite bands. This was on repeat for four years while I was in college. Sorry for the cheasy "Girl Interrupted" video but it was the only thing I could find and ironically/sadly the way I discovered them. Enjoy.

Wilco is an American alternative country rock band based in Chicago, Illinois. The band was formed in 1994 by the remaining members of alternative country group Uncle Tupelo following singer Jay Farrar's departure. Wilco's lineup has changed frequently, with only singer Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt remaining from the original incarnation. Wilco has released seven studio albums, a live double album, and three collaborations.

SYL APPROVED

If you haven't heard the genius that is Juango Davalos, I dont blame you. On the other hand, if I ask you that same question after u read this post and the answer is still the same, then please go *%!@ Urself...HARD!
Lots of great artists coming out the Dominican Republic and making a name for themselves, Juango is definitely on the top of that list. With his  last effort, Un Niño Antiguo, he cemented the foundation of what I hope is an electro pop uprising.
Enough with the rhetoric, enjoy a couple of his songs and come Friday and support the cause.

SYL APPROVED

It's not everyday you can see one of the most celebrated indie acts of the year, so the fact that Phantogram will be playing for free @ Fellini Ristorante is an epic event that should not be taken lightly.I first talked about Phantogram way back in March for the SYL 1.3.2010 playlist and I never imagined that they would ever play here. Thanks to the people who made this happen as well as the people who have supported this blog day in and day out. The main purpose of this site will and always be providing good music  for good people. Now lets take it one step further and really enjoy the hell out of it.

Here are a couple of tracks as well as some most excellent remixes by Phantogram from their eponymous effort "Eyelid Movies".
