SYL TV Pick - Shameless

I've been mulling the idea of doing TV and Movie posts for a while. I enjoy a good show or movie as much as a good tune so I guess the glove fits. Anyways these posts will mostly consist of me trying to convince you on why you should watch. No pretentious existential bloviating here.

Shameless is a remake of a long running UK show of the same name. The series follows the dysfunctional family of Frank Gallagher, a single father of six children. While he spends his days drunk, his kids learn to take care of themselves.

Shameless just concluded its first season and has already been renewed for its second, thank you TV Gods. I have described this show to friends as Modern Family on crack. Anything goes in this dark comedy and while most remakes tend to suck this one fires on all cylinders. Its soooo good.  The acting by Emmy Rossum (Fiona) and William H. Macy (Frank) is impeccable and will surely garner them nominations in the months to come. Do yourself a favor and start watching.

SYL Retro Song Pick - Stairway To Heaven (Led Zeppelin Cover) by Far Corporation

If Stairway To Heaven were written in the 80's

Far Corporation is a band created by record producer Frank Farian, who created the bands Boney M. and Milli Vanilli. The name was shortened from "Frank Farian Corporation", which was originally put together to record a cover of the Paul Simon piece "Mother and Child Reunion" as a charity record and reached the top 10 in several European countries.
Far Corporation's primary claim to fame is their cover of "Stairway to Heaven". Contrary to public perception, Far Corporation was actually the first group to make the singles charts with this song as Led Zeppelin had never released it as a single.

SYL Retro Song Pick - You Made Me The Thief Of Your Heart by Sinead O'Connor

Sinéad Marie Bernadette O'Connor is an Irish singer-songwriter. She rose to fame in the late 1980s with her debut album The Lion and the Cobra and achieved worldwide success in 1990 with a cover of the song "Nothing Compares 2 U".
Since then, she has occasionally encountered controversy, partly due to her forthright statements and gestures, ordination as a priest, and expressed strong views on organized religion, women's rights, war, and child abuse while still maintaining a singing career.

SYL Retro Song Pick - Thirty Three by Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins is an American band that formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1988. Less overtly sharing the punk rock roots of many of their alt-rock contemporaries, the Pumpkins have a diverse, densely layered, and guitar-heavy sound, containing elements of gothic rock, shoegazing, grunge, new wave, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, arena rock, and, in later recordings, electronica. Frontman Billy Corgan is the group's primary songwriter—his grand musical ambitions and cathartic lyrics have shaped the band's albums and songs, which have been described as "anguished, bruised reports from Billy Corgan's nightmare-land".

Essential 5 - Radiohead

Its been a while since I've done one of these but I think that with the announcement that Radiohead will be releasing their 8th studio album "King Of Limbs" this Saturday there is no better time. The sheer epicness of their past work cannot be overstated enough and because of it, this Essential 5 post will not be like the others.

Very few times I listen to an album from beginning to end in one sitting. Much less enjoy every second of it. Radiohead is the exception. Some of their work (Pablo Honey, The Bends, In Rainbows) fit a more traditional/linear cohesiveness that is greatly appreciated by the masses.   Others such as Kid A, Amnesiac and Ok Computer border on lunacy with structures and references that will challenge even the their most die hard fans. Genius pretty much sums up all of them. This is why I cannot simply pick their 5 most essential songs so I will pick their 5 most essential songs out of each of their studio albums. Again, most of their hit singles, like Karma Police, High and Dry , Fake Plastic Trees,  etc will be excluded from the list since since they are already known by everyone with an ounce of good taste.

Their albums show the natural progression into maturity bands tend to take, but I challenge anyone to show me a better example of its uniqueness.

Massive post ahead. Enjoy.

SYL Retro Song Pick - Cities In Dust by Siouxsie & The Banshees

Siouxsie and the Banshees were a British rock band formed in 1976 by vocalist Siouxsie Sioux and bassist Steven Severin. Initially associated with the British punk rock scene, the band rapidly evolved to create "a form of post-punk discord full of daring rhythmic and sonic experimentation". The Times cited Siouxsie and the Banshees as "one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era".
